Foreign Students Arriving at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences

Foreign students who will study in various study programmes at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences have mostly arrived for one study semester. The opportunities offered by Information Technology and Tourism study fields have aroused the greatest interest among the students. During the studies, they will learn not only the chosen study courses, but also the Latvian language and culture. During the introductory week, students were introduced to the opportunities offered by ViA and Valmiera. The young people met with the management of Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, the Students' Union, the Erasmus Student Network (ESN Valmiera) and the representatives of Valmiera City Municipality; as well as that, they visited the university premises, the library and attended the first introductory lectures to get familiar with the university environment.

At the same time, students together with their mentors participated in various informal get-together events, including the Latvian evening, getting to know Latvian traditions and the national cuisine.

“Thanks to foreign students, Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences students gain international experience. When participating in lectures and practical classes, foreign students talk about their country, nation, business practices and even innovative solutions. In turn, our students and staff help foreign students get an opinion about Latvia, Valmiera and the values of our nation,” said Maira Leščevica, Academic Vice-Rector of Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences.

Maira Leščevica also emphasized that the presence of foreign students and lecturers created an international environment, providing an opportunity to speak English and other languages more.

"I really liked the study courses offered by Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences and, judging by the positive reviews, it seems that I have not made a mistake in my choice," said Paula Rodriges Berokal from Spain. She admitted that she did not know much about the Latvian culture and traditions yet, but she was looking forward to participating in events and activities. "I'm very excited about the snow," said Paula laughing, "in Spain, the country I come from, it doesn't snow in winter."

Paula has chosen to study tourism. "I like to explore foreign countries. It's a good way to get to know other cultures and new traditions. So far I haven't had many opportunities to travel, but in the summer I studied in Germany and I really enjoyed it there. I hope that this experience will be similar to the previous one. I know little about Valmiera and I still have trouble finding my way in it, but the city looks nice. Valmiera is very green and offers many opportunities in the open air which is important to me.”
